13 Days Safari and Zanzibar
Day 1: Arusha
In the morning we will meet and greet you at Kilimanjaro Airport. Your personal guide and driver for this week will take us to Arusha to your first accommodation. We will accompany you to check-in, discuss travel plans with you and answer your questions. First of all, arrive and relax. In the afternoon, your driver will take you to the city center. Where you can get your first impressions of African life on a tour, make small purchases or experience local handicrafts in the Maasai Market.
Day 2: Tarangire National Park
In the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and drive to Tarangire National Park. This park is home to the largest herds of elephants in northern Tanzania. The park’s wildlife congregates along the Tarangire River, which carries water all year round. There you can see elephants, giraffes, bushbucks, hartebeests, dikdiks, waterbucks, warthogs and reedbucks at any time of the year. In addition, the park is home to buffalo, zebra and wildebeest, which are always pursued by a number of predators such as lions. Well-camouflaged leopards can be seen with a bit of luck, cheetahs are rarely spotted. From the open roof of the vehicle, you can take in the typical landscape of the park and observe the animals. After an extensive game drive, you will leave the park in the late afternoon and drive to your accommodation in Karatu, where you will spend the night.
Day 3: Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, we make our way to the Serengeti National Park. The word “Serengeti” means “endless plains”. Every year, from May to December, millions of herd animals such as wildebeest and zebra embark on a migration that takes them from the central Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara and back again in an incredible spectacle. Known as the “Great Migration”. During this time, huge herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles roam here, following the grazing grounds in search of food, along with groups of elephants, giraffes and buffalo. While lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals, for their part, pursue their meals.
Day 4: Serengeti National Park, Full Day Game Drive
Today we have planned as the highlight of your safari, it is all about wildlife observation until the evening. Keep an eye out for the Big Five. Elephants, lions and buffaloes will easily and in large numbers come in front of your lens.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast we set off on a unique safari tour in the Ngorongoro Volcanic Crater. After descending to the crater floor, which is about 600 meters below, you will visit the “largest zoo in the world” with about 30,000 large mammals living here permanently. Nowhere in Tanzania is there a greater chance of seeing the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, buffalo) in front of your photo lens. At Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwest corner of the crater, which is one of the main features of the crater, we will take the time for a picnic lunch. Today you will spend the night in Karatu again.
Day 6 The Hadzabe People
Today you will have breakfast around 7:00 in the morning. After breakfast, we will make our way to Lake Eyasi, home of Hadzabe and Datoga. The Hadza or Hadzabe are an indigenous ethnic group in north-central Tanzania who live around the lake in the central Rift Valley and on the neighboring Serengeti Plateau. In 2015, there were between 1,200 and 1,300 Hadza members. They are characterized by being the only population in East Africa that continues to rely on hunting and gathering for their livelihood. Linguistically, they speak Hadzane, a click language that has phonetic similarities to other Khoisan click languages, but is not mutually intelligible with any of them. Although smoking marijuana is illegal in Tanzania, Hadzabe smoke without any problems. For the overnight stay, we make our way to Lake Manyara.
Day 7: Lake Manyara
The Manyara National Park is a biosphere reserve with a size of 330 square kilometers. The area around the eponymous Lake Manyara provides habitat for thousands of pink flamingos, other waterfowl and over 300 other tropical bird species. The landscape varies between groundwater and acacia forests, open grasslands and marshes. You will encounter large troops of baboons and look out for elephants, giraffes, impalas, bushbucks, waterbucks, warthogs and blue monkeys in the green of the forests. If you’re lucky, you’ll see lions resting in acacia trees. A behavior for which the lions of the park are famous.
After a relaxing breakfast, we visit the Manyara National Park in the morning with its impressive landscape, which is characterized by the alkaline lake, green umbrella acacia forests and huge, ancient baobab trees. Pure green nature with the largest bird nests in the world built by small hammerhead birds. You will find that the wildlife is less present in Manyara Park than in the parks you have visited so far. This is where your ability to observe, search and find is required. With a little spirit of discovery, you can spot the park’s animals in the green of the forests.
Day 8: Hot Springs of Kikuletwa
Before flying to Zanzibar this afternoon, you’ll head to the Kikuletwa hot springs after breakfast. At the springs, you can enjoy the end of your safari adventure according to your wishes. Snooze in the sun, chat with the locals at the small bar or swim in the warm spring water – you set the course. We’ll leave the hot springs in time so you can catch your connecting flight on time.
