Hadzabe and Datoga at Lake Eyasi
Lake Eyasi, a hidden gem in the Great Rift Valley, is home to the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes, who live here in the traditional way in harmony with the environment. The Hadzabe, a hunter-gatherer tribe known for its deep connection to the land, and the Datoga, a herding tribe that has lived in the area for centuries.
The Hadzabe are an indigenous ethnic group of Tanzania, of about 2,000 people. They are one of the last remaining groups of hunter-gatherers in Africa and have lived in the region for thousands of years. They have their own language, which resembles that of the Kalahari Bushmen with its clicking sounds, without being related to it. The Hadzabe people are known for their traditional hunting and gathering practices. To this day, tools such as bows, arrows and digging sticks are used. They collect honey, berries and other wild fruits and nuts.
A visit to a Hadzabe village begins before sunrise. Watch the local hunters demonstrate their hunting techniques and practices for attracting and killing their prey. After enjoying breakfast, you can visit the local markets to get to know typical Hadzabe and Datoga handicrafts and then take the opportunity to marvel at the variety of over 400 bird species on a trip to Lake Eyasi.
Then, when the sun sets over the lake in the evening, the colors of the sky change and paint the landscape with a warm orange glow. When the stars appear in the sky, listen to the sounds of the night; the call of the hyenas and the distant roar of the lions. Pure Africa!
