Olduvai Gorge

For friends of archaeology, Tanzania has the Olduvai Gorge, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, as a safari highlight. The Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania is known as the »Cradle of Humankind«, which contains the earliest evidence of the existence of human ancestors. Finds of hundreds of fossilized bones and tools millions of years old have led to the conclusion that humans originated in Africa. Early humans used the habitats there over a period of 200,000 years

The steep gorge is located in the Great Rift Valley, between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park. It is about 48 kilometers long almost 90 meters deep. On your way to the Serengeti National Park, the monument that marks the turnoff to the gorge is not to be missed. A museum at the edge of the gorge presents fossil remains of human ancestors and the animal world of that time and informs about the geological formation of the gorge.
