Sightseeing features
The excursion possibilities mentioned here are, so to speak, the “classics” of a stay in Zanzibar. They are just a small selection of the multitude of other offers worth seeing and experiencing, which you can book in your accomodation during your stay on the island.
Visit to Stone-Town
On this approximately 3-hour guided sightseeing tour of the capital of Zanzibar, you will not only visit the historical sights such as the old fortress, the house of the Sultan of Oman with the House of Miracles, or the old Anglican cathedral – which has an inglorious past as a transshipment point for the East African slave trade. The tour will also take you to places that will appeal to visitors’ contemporary tastes, such as the Freddie Mercury House, Jaws Corner coffee shop, Forodhani Garden, where you’ll find one of the area’s most popular street food markets in the evening.
Visit to Prison Island
Although the island has this name, it was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever sufferers. Prisoners were not housed here. A special attraction of the island are giant tortoises living there, some of which are over 100 years old and which are welcome to be fed. After visiting the turtles, you can explore the world of colorful tropical fish among the coral reefs off the island.
Visit to a spice farm
Enjoy a 3-hour guided tour of an organic spice farm and discover one of Zanzibar’s most popular industries: spices. Your guide will explain how the spices are grown and used as medicines or flavor enhancers in dishes. Very inconspicuous-looking plants turn out to be lemongrass, vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg and Co. Touch, smell and taste the spices and herbs directly on the plants – you have certainly never experienced spices so fresh. Pick and taste fruits directly from the tree, which you only know at home from the supermarket
At the end of your visit you will enjoy an aromatic lunch where you will find the spices again. You are welcome to participate in the preparation of the food.
