We will be honest with you from the beginning
There are hundreds of safari operators in Tanzania. Most of them will tell you that they have the best guides, the most personalized service, and an unbeatable passion for wildlife. We’ll spare you and us that.
What we can say is this: Tanger Safaris is an owner-managed company run by a Tanzanian-German team based in Arusha in the shadow of Mount Meru. We are not a platform. We are not a call center. Those who write to us write to the people who are personally planning your trip.
I, Irene Robert Mrang’U, was born and raised in Tanzania, with roots in the Maasai and Chagga culture that go deep into the country we take you through. My German husband brings the perspective of a person who fell in love with Africa from the outside. This means that when we talk about this country, we are talking about our home. This combination – insider knowledge and outsider view – characterises every safari we plan.
We work with a small circle of trusted guides, camps, and lodges – not the largest selection, but ones we know personally and can rely on. If something is wrong on your trip, contact us directly. No ticket system. No queue. Us.
Tanzania through our eyes
Many guests arrive with a version of Africa made up of documentaries, Instagram feeds, and childhood dreams. We do not want to correct this image. We want to give it more depth.
Tanger Safaris was founded on the idea that the best safari guide is someone who not only knows where the lions are, but also understands why the Maasai warrior next to you observes the horizon differently than you do. I was born into this culture. Our team lives in it.
We are a Tanzanian-German company, which means that we also know exactly what our guests from Europe and the rest of the world need to feel comfortable, well-informed, and safe. We speak both languages – literally and in all other senses.
A safari should leave
something in you
The word safari comes from Arabic. It means journey. Not the package. No experience. Not a product. A trip is something that changes you in ways you didn’t plan. Our philosophy is simple: we don’t fill days. We open it. We plan every itinerary based on what you’ll remember ten years from now, not what looks best on a checklist.
This sometimes means suggesting a route that takes longer. A camp that is harder to reach, but impossible to forget. A morning in the bush without an agenda, because the best things in the Serengeti do not announce themselves. We don’t measure the success of a safari by the number of animals sighted, but by what our guests say when they come back.
We plan every detail.
Then we remain flexible.
A good safari is not improvised. Logistics are crucial: the right vehicle for the terrain, the right timing for the migration, the right balance between game drives and rest. We take all of this seriously.
But Tanzania is a wild country, and wild countries don’t stick to schedules. A leopard doesn’t show up because it’s on the itinerary. Our philosophy is to prepare everything that can be prepared – and then leave room for what is not possible. We see ourselves as planners who know when to stop planning. Guides who know when to stop talking. And as a partner who knows the difference between a trip that goes according to plan and a truly unforgettable trip.
